6 Celebrities Who You Didn’t Know Are Recovering From Addiction

When we think of celebrities, it’s easy to think about what movies they’ve been in, what songs they have sung, or what accomplishments they have made in their lives. We think of their Instagram posts, appearances on late night television, or even the ordinary moments that remind us that they are human.

But with those ordinary moments are sometimes accompanied by negative moments. None more so than celebrities battling or recovering from an addiction.

Some stories have been thrown in the spotlight, such as Robert Downey Jr.’s well-chronicled battle with addiction in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

There have been a number of other celebrities who have struggled with addiction that may have slipped under the radar.

Zac Efron

The former High School Musical star actually struggled with addiction before reaching adulthood. In 2013, Efron was involved with a few legal troubles before being sent to rehab two times for a cocaine addiction.

Fortunately, Efron has recovered from his addiction and has headlined a number of films since then.

Demi Lovato

Another former Disney star, Lovato had such an addiction to cocaine that she was smuggling it on airplanes from an early age. Lovato battled her addiction for many years before checking herself into rehab.

Since the care received in rehab, she has been an outspoken voice about her addiction and honest with fans and observers from around the world.

Oprah

Oprah has been one of the most influential media voices in the 21st century, but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t battled her demons. During one of her shows in the mid-90s, Oprah opened up about her addiction to crack cocaine.

The retired media mogul has been able to turn her story of pain into hope and inspired millions around the world with her openness and honesty.

Stephen King

While King has come back into the limelight with his classic book It being remade along with a sequel, he has struggled with addiction in the past. He described himself as having an addictive personality and would take just about anything that would change his consciousness.

After a few family interventions, King was able to kick his addiction and many great works such as The Green Mile and Dark Tower actually came from his sobriety.

Jon Hamm

Mad Men star Jon Hamm is open about his struggle with alcohol as well as his 30-day stint in rehab. During interviews about his time in rehab, he always makes a point to fight against the stigma and insists it’s just like battling any other disease.

Today, he is still an advocate for rehab and recovery, saying “medical attention is medical attention, whether it’s for your elbow or for your teeth or for your brain.”

Daniel Radcliffe

Best known for his role as Harry Potter in the 8-part movie series, Daniel Radcliffe struggled with addiction while wrapping up the last three films in the series. While those movies wrapped up years ago, it was only recently that Radcliffe opened up about his drinking in a series of interviews in late 2019 and early 2020.

He says that his addiction is under control but he is still going through recovery but speaks candidly about his recovery and continued battle.
